Taking Intentional Action is not just the title, it’s a way of life.

Good intentions can only take us so far.

As I write this, I am about 30 minutes into a three-hour flight. I had very good intentions of reading a book for the full three hours, and yet, within the first 15 minutes I already had a movie turned on and was ready to close my eyes for a while.

There is zero shame in taking time to slow down, relax, give yourself a bit of grace, and to unplug from the constant pressure to always do something with our time.

But…

Our goals are our goals for a reason. Our intentions were set because we know that on the other side of those intentions lies a result that we want. Whether it’s to eat healthier and exercise to lose weight, to read more so we can learn new skills, or to be the bigger person so our estranged relationships can be mended. Our intentions are good.

Unfortunately, when our good intentions are not followed by action, they remain intentions, often there to mock us and make us feel guilty that we didn’t follow through on this thing that we said we wanted. Action is a necessary step, but it can also be a misguided one. When we take action simply because we believe we’re meant to, or because someone told us we should, we may end up going in the wrong direction, only to have to course correct later, and to be even further from the outcome that we want.

So, what is the message here?

I took intentional action.

As I sat between two strangers and hit play on How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days for the thirtieth time, I asked myself. Is this the best use of my time right now? Do I need to relax, or am I just being lazy? If I don’t get any other time to finish the things on my to-do list today, will I regret watching this movie?

I was honest with myself, I paused the movie, and I opened my laptop.

Taking Intentional Action means that we ask ourselves the better questions of “why do I want what I say I want?” “Who do I need to create, or deepen a relationship with?” “Do I currently have the skills to get what it is that I say I want? Or do I need to start smaller?” etc.

Asking these questions with the intention of having a clear game plan of what’s to come, will help us be successful at not only analyzing our current state, but also redefining what it is that we want, and following through on the process.
