Sixteen years ago, Thom’s first single, “I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker” shot to #1 in 7 countries. With zero sales history in music, she was offered a world-wide distribution deal.  When she gave birth to her son in 2016, she stepped back from the music world to focus on parenting and volunteer work (she has rehoused hundreds of street dogs). Thom sees herself as, “Somewhat of a rebel with a cause.” With over 70 million Spotify streams, she continues to connect with her listeners and her popularity continues to grow. In this interview with Inspiring Lives Magazine, Thom provides insight into her musical life.

  1. What motivates you as a musician ?

The possibility that through my music I can positively impact someone’s life. When I get messages from people telling me my songs helped them through hard times and inspired them to keep going it’s the ultimate job satisfaction.

  1. How do you support other women through your work?

I find a lot of young female upcoming artists look up to me. This is really humbling and so I try to give the best advice possible. It can be a hard industry to navigate as a young woman, so I try to impart as much advice and wisdom through my own experiences as I can.

  1. In what ways do you feel you can inspire others through your music ?

Hopefully, I can inspire others by continuing to be authentic and true to my work. Authenticity is the key. Despite being pushed and shoved in so many different directions throughout the years, I’ve always remained true to my vision. It’s important in these times to try to be as authentic as possible.

  1. Tell our readers about your favourite musicians and their influences on your music…

I was influenced by a lot of great singers of course, like Stevie wonder. But also by great songwriters like Joni Mitchell. The biggest influence is probably Fleetwood Mac with the elaborate percussive drums and 3 part harmonies which re-appear time and time again in my songs.

Sandi first came to prominence in the mid-noughties as one of the first artists to pioneer a streamed tour, performing broadcasts from her Tooting home. The online concerts made headlines at the time with Thom's shows beginning with 60 viewers before exploding into an excess of 100,000, landing her a deal with RCA/Sony. The artist then released her 2006 single I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair) which topped the charts across the UK, Ireland, and remained at no.1 in Australia for 10 consecutive weeks. I wish I was a punk rocker stands at a whopping 70 million plays on Spotify. Sandi is a woman who has been through a turbulent journey both personally and within the music industry. She is now at a point, where she is releasing music, re-inventing the protest song about issues within society and the impact of this on mental health, keen to be heard again through her music and her life experiences and now as a mother she has a passionate story to tell.
